Shooting Struggles and Slow Start Doom JV Lions’

By Joshua Woolverton

The MACA Lions JV basketball team could not get their shots to fall against the Saint Maria Goretti Gaels. The Lions lost by a score of 27-19 marking their second lost to Goretti on the season.

“Sometime the ball falls for you and sometimes it doesn’t,” MACA JV coach Thomas Clark said. “The basketball just didn’t want to find its way in on our side of the court.”

The Lions looked sloppy at the start of the game. They were down 9-4 in the first quarter, however they stayed focused and rallied to tie the game at 11 by halftime. The defense played particularly well hold the Gaels to just two points in the second quarter.

“We had a lot of turnovers we needed to fix,” Billy Staton said. “We fought hard the whole game and didn’t let anything get to our head.”

Staton led the Lions in scoring with 8 points, however the whole team struggled with shots regularly rimming out.

“We had a lot of open shots out there, but we just couldn’t knock it down,” Staton said.

Despite the struggles, the team kept the game close and maintained their focus. Clark said the team was jelling and they did a good job on defense as a result of practice repetitions together.

“If we were to play these guys again I don’t think there’s any reason we couldn’t beat them,” Clark said. “I look forward to our next outing.”
