February Student Athletes of the Month

MACA February Student  Athletes of the Month

Keirra Shaffer, Senior, Varsity Girls Basketball

Coach Finch states, Keirra Shaffer is a natural athlete and uses her God given talents not only on the court but off the court as well. I have enjoyed having the opportunity to coach her during her senior year.”  Keirra has been a constant for the Lady Lions this season, often playing through injuries. Coach Finch says, “She does not come off the court often and I can count on her for all the tough assignments.” Keirra is a leader on the team and has been a mentor to the younger players.  Always counted on to give 100% effort all the time, Keirra expects a lot out of her play and works hard at it. As the Captain of the 2017-18 Lady Lions, Keirra’s leadership and example will have an impact on this group for years to come.

Mark Webster, Junior, Varsity Boys Basketball

Mark saved his best for last in the month of February. He averaged 9.4 points for February and in the last seven games of the playoff run averaged 10.7 points per game. MACA Head Coach Tim Webster states, “Mark wears his heart on his sleeve. Whether he is putting three fingers upside his head after a three or shouting to the team on defense, “Let’s go,” he always gives his best on both ends of the court.” Mark enjoys seeing others score as much as he loves to score himself. He and Austin Finch have had a potent two-man game going on the right side of the court all year. Mark is a threat from beyond the three-point line and also in taking the ball hard to the hoop. He went to the line 13 times in February, making 11 of them for a 85% average. Coach Webster concludes, “Congratulations, Mark, and thank you for your impact on the team in February.”

Hattie Tobery, 6th Grade, Middle School Girls Basketball

Coach Tommy Thompson states, “As our team manager, Hattie was a tremendous support system for this years team.”  Hattie Tobery took the opportunity as the MACA MS girls team manager to not only assist with bookkeeping and other student manager tasks, but also accepted Coach Thompson’s invitation to practice with the team all season.  Coach Thompson states, “In practicing with the team all year, I believe Hattie gained the confidence to join us as a player next year.”

Cody Hitchcock, 8th Grade, Middle School Boys Basketball

In speaking of this month’s Student Athlete selection, Coach Teixeira states, “We nicknamed Cody very early in the season as our version of Charles Barkley. He played as an undersized forward all season.  He had the best tryout and improved his jump shot from last year. All these things are great, but what made Cody our Athlete of the Month was that he wanted to improve his game all season. He wanted to learn how to be a better post player, even through the last practice making him a real student of the game and the most coachable player on the team this year. Cody is a hard worker and never complained about working too hard.”
