MACA December Athletes of the Month
Erin Eppich, Junior, Varsity Girls Basketball
Speaking about this month’s Student Athlete of the Month, Lady Lions Varsity Coach Gary Finch states, “Erin is a very kind person who always looks out for her teammates and is quick to pick someone up and encourage them. She works hard and is always asking questions and takes those responses to heart and makes changes to her game when necessary. Erin is a great leader and friend to all on the team.” A player who can be counted on to give 100% at every practice and game, she has continued to push herself to change her game and to be more productive offensively. As one of the Lady Lions captains for the 2017-18 season, Erin constantly encourages her teammates to do better and leads by example. During the month of December the Lady Lions played 7 games to include the University of Valley Forge Holiday Tournament. Erin had 70 points, 10 offensive rebounds and 18 defensive rebounds. She capped off the month by being nominated by the other coaches as the Valley Forge MVP and All-Tournament team selection.
Christian Eppich, Freshman, Junior Varsity Boys Basketball
It is always exciting to see young men mature and take on new challenges and responsibilities, and Christian has started his MACA high school career in a positive way. Not only does he show enthusiasm and a love for the game, he also demonstrates leadership by encouraging teammates, praying before and after games, and working hard in practice and games. On more than one occasion, he has helped opponents up or checked on them after a collision or loose ball scrap. Anyone who has been around basketball knows that confidence is a significant part of improving and reaching potential, and Christian is growing game by game. On assessing Christian's first month and a half of basketball, Coach Schuetz states "Christian was perhaps a little tentative at first, but now he is beginning to grow in confidence and is becoming a weapon on both sides of the court for the JV team. He is looking to drive and attack the hoop more often instead of settling for jumpshots." It will be fun to watch Christian develop his game over the next few seasons.
Kat Thompson, 7th Grade, Middle School Girls Basketball
“Katrina works extremely hard to not only be the best basketball player she can be but the best teammate she can be as well, “ says Coach Tommy Thompson. In most cases, Kat is not the biggest or fastest player on the floor, but she will always give her all to help her team win.
Whether it is cheering on all the girls at practice - encouraging everyone to do their best, especially during dribbling drills, or being called on to take a key shot, Kat is quickly becoming a leader for the MS Lady Lions. A highlight of the month for Kat came in a conference win over MSD in which she scored 18 points including five 3 pointers.
Connor Gilbert, 8th Grade, Middle School Boys Basketball
Connor has had a great December scoring points. After only scoring 5 points the 1st game and only 4 the second, he has gone on to leading the team in scoring with 13, 18, and 15 points in the last 3 games of the month. Scoring is just one of the things that he has done well this month. He is a leader on and off the court and continues to improve his game in practice. Coach Teixeira states, “Hard work are the words I would use to describe his effort. I look forward to his continued improvement the rest of the season.”
